Dec. 19, 2008 — Thanks in great part to her introduction via “American Idol,” Carrie Underwood has a huge fan base outside of country music, but she’s not likely to make major changes in her sound just to reach out beyond the genre.

“I don’t have goals like that,” Carrie told The Arizona Republic. “I just do what I do and hope that I can keep doing it. If stuff like that happens, then it’s awesome. But if not, then that’s fine, too.”

Apparently she doesn’t need to do that. “Before He Cheats” got plenty of airplay on pop stations, even though industry experts suggested it wouldn’t happen.

“We were told upfront that it was too country and that we needed to change the music on it … so it sounded more poppy,” she recalled. “I’m not willing to do that.”

Carrie joins Martina McBride and Julianne Hough to sing “Rockin’ Around The Christmas Tree” this weekend on GAC’s Opry Live. The episode premieres at 9 p.m. ET on Saturday.
